What kind of natural stone is available for home improvements?

There are many types of natural stones use in home improvement today here are just a few.

Marble:
Marble is Ideal for foyers, bathrooms, floors, and hearths. Marble has been valued for thousands of years for its rich palette of beautiful colors and appearance. It is a perfect stone choice for many places in the house or building. Marble stones consist of limestone that has undergone heat and pressure. A transformation process takes place when the weight of overlying material, pressure from crystal collisions and heat from the earth's core generate temperatures in excess of 1800ºF. Texture of marble depends on the form, size and uniformity of grains. The element components of marble determine the color of the stone. Generally Calcite and Dolomite marbles are in pure white color. Variations of whiteness of pure marbles are due to the mixture of foreign substances. Such impurities form streaks and clouds that give marble the beautiful look for us to choose.

Granite:
Granite is an excellent choice for kitchen countertops, floors, and other heavily used surfaces. Granite is an important structural and decorative stone. It is used for the immense structural work due to its high compressive strength and durability. It is the hardest structural stone. The characteristics of rich colors, stiffness, and density in granite make it an ideal choice for flooring, counter tops, vanities as well as exterior applications. Many stylish patterns and colors make granite the most versatile and trendy of all stones. It is also a very low-maintenance-required stone, especially in preventing graffiti. Granite is composed of quartz, feldspars, micas and other minerals. These minerals contribute to the color and texture of the granite stones. Granite gets it wonderful variety of colors and patterns from minerals that are melted into the liquid mass as it is formed.

Limestone:
Limestone is widely used as a building stone because it is readily available and easy to handle. Popular applications include countertops, flooring, interior and exterior wall cladding, and exterior paving. The soft limestone stones are ideal for today's more casual and comfortable environments. Generally these soft beige’s and tans are suitable for bathrooms, fireplaces, counters and floors. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is formed at the bottom of lakes and seas, as organic matters settle to the bottom. As more and more layers build up over thousands and millions of years, adding more and more weight, the heat and pressure cause chemical reactions to take place to harden the sediments into solid stone.

Slates:
Slate is a popular flooring material and sandstone and slate are often used for exterior paving stones, or pavers. Other sandstone applications include fireplace facings, chimneys, garden walls, patio benches, and pool side. Additional slate applications include kitchen countertops, fireplace facings, tabletops, and roofing. The lively colors and unique texture make slates appropriate for interior as well as exterior applications. Slate is derived of compressed layers of sediments that are formed under ocean. Since it is formed in layers, slate can easily be split to expose beautifully textured surfaces. The usual colors of slates are earthy browns, beige’s, yellows, black, dark-grays, and greenish-gray. Meanwhile, the colors of pinks, purples and copper are also found. They usually exhibit lots of variations even in the same quarry. Slates are used for flooring, cladding, and landscaping.

Quartzite:
Recommended Applications are Wall-cladding, Flooring and all other interior & exterior applications depending upon the imagination of an architect. Quartzite stones are the same with slates, but with higher content of quartz in them, which gives them, a bright texture. They are very similar to slates. Like slates, quartzite’s are used for various applications depending on their hardness.

Sandstone:
Sandstone applications include fireplace facings, chimneys, garden walls, patio benches, and pool side. Additional slate applications include kitchen countertops, fireplace facings, tabletops, and roofing. Sandstone consists of sand covered by silica, iron and lime. Cementing material determines the color of sandstone, iron sandstone are reddish, brownish; carbonaceous, black; siliceous, white and argillaceous, earthy to buff. The hardness of sandstone is important in deciding suitability for applications for sandstone.

Adding a room addition advice:

To start with you should have a good idea of what you want to spend and accomplish such as we need 2 more bedroom and a full bathroom or we want 2 bedrooms, a full bathroom and a master bedroom with walk in closet and full bathroom with a tub and a separate shower. You get the idea

Once you have at least a tentative budget and an idea of what you want to accomplish then it time to look for a good builder/contractor and get some bids.

Most knowledgeable builder will give you a free estimate without having to invest in plans up front.

If you do hire an independent architect you can plan on spending many time more then if you go through your builder and it’s not only the money you spend but you may fine them not up to snuff for the city and your builder may refuse to use them witch leaves you shopping for a builder to fit your plan

Take your time finding a builder. A great way to find a builder is by talking to other people that have had the experience. You can also look to the Internet, the Better Business Bureau Pages or the yellow pages

You’ll find that a good builder want to know that you and they are compatible and they aren’t just trying to write up the job and get your deposit, as some sales persons may do.

Pick a builder not only by price but also by their experience and referrals. Make sure it’s someone you trust. If you have doubts go on to some one else.

Never pull the permits for a job someone else is going to do this will make you liable for the job and leave them without any liability whatsoever

Once you’ve hired a builder have faith in him. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as the project goes along.

This is a large undertaking but do not let it overwhelm you to your builder it fairly simple. Be prepared for the interior to take sometime, as there are many steps and inspections and the finishing touches are what make the project a work of art and pride.

We hope you have a great experience with your home remodeling and we always wish you the best
